Shared or private, what time of day, and how far south you are willing to drive. Get those three right and the rest of it — the car, the camel, the board, the camp — is much the same wherever you book.
A seat in the car, or the whole car
The shared safari puts you in a Land Cruiser with five strangers for about what a taxi across town costs. Private multiplies that, and what it buys is timing: leave when you want, stop on the ridge you want, come back when the light goes rather than when the group does.
Morning, sunset, or after dark
Mornings are cool and the dunes are still unmarked. Sunset is the photograph everybody came for, and the cars queue for the same ridge to get it. After dark the camps light up and the sky does the work — but that only works from October, once the nights are cold enough to sit out in.
Sealine, or all the way to the water
Most safaris stop in the dune belt behind Sealine, an hour out of the city. Khor Al Adaid is another hour past that, across live sand no hire car is permitted on, and it is the only place on earth where the sea runs this far into a desert.

A peninsula you can drive end to end before lunch. The capital and its souq, the sand that starts below Mesaieed, the inland sea on the Saudi border, mangroves in the north and four steel plates standing in the desert out west.
Three things that happen in Qatar and nowhere else.
Dunes and souqs run the length of the Gulf. A sea fifteen kilometres inside a desert, a pearling town left exactly where it fell, and a kilometre of standing steel do not.
Khor Al Adaid
The Gulf pushes fifteen kilometres inland here and stops against the dunes, a tidal inlet with desert on three sides of it. It is a protected reserve closed to unaccompanied vehicles, and the crossing runs over sand that rearranges itself between one trip and the next. Drivers air down at the edge and read the ridges; there is no track to follow, and the tide decides how close anyone gets.

Al Zubarah
A walled pearling and trading town of six thousand people, thriving in the eighteenth century, sacked and then simply abandoned. The sand kept it. What lies under the dunes is one of the most complete Gulf towns anywhere, and the fort standing over it went up in 1938 out of the same coral stone. It is the country’s only World Heritage site.

The city runs past forty-five degrees between May and September and the sand runs hotter still. Safaris move to dawn or to after four, the Corniche empties out, and everything in the hours between happens under a roof — beneath the souq awnings, inside the museums, or on the water once the sun is off it.
The inland sea is the one thing here that nowhere else has.
The Gulf reaches fifteen kilometres inland at the Saudi border and stops in a bowl of dunes. No road gets to it. You cross in a convoy of four-wheel-drives over sand that moves, and the last ridge before the water is the whole reason people pay for the long version rather than the short one.

Zekreet is a film set, a forest of limestone mushrooms and four steel plates.
An hour and a half west of Doha the wind has undercut the limestone into mushroom heads, an abandoned film village sits half-buried in the sand, and Richard Serra stood four steel plates a kilometre apart across the desert. Almost none of it is signposted, which is most of the appeal.

Hamad hands out more transit time than any airport ought to.
A long connection in Doha is a free half-day if you plan for it. Transit visas are issued on arrival for most passports, the city is fifteen minutes from the terminal, and the operators build the whole run backwards from your outbound gate.
